Even complex trauma wounds can be healed with time and expert care.

Once the emergency department has stabilized a traumatic injury, many patients still face weeks or months of wound care, and not all primary care offices are equipped for complex trauma wounds. Ironworks offers ongoing care for road rash, crush injuries, severe lacerations, degloving injuries, and post-accident wound healing.

For acute, severe, or heavily bleeding injuries, always go to the nearest emergency room first. Once stabilized, we can take over the ongoing wound healing process.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Trauma wound visits focus on understanding exactly what tissue was damaged, what’s healing, and what’s stalled.

First visit runs 60 to 90 minutes. Bring any ER paperwork, imaging, and a list of medications.

Detailed history of the injury and treatment so far

Review of emergency department or prior provider records

Current wound assessment: measurement, depth, drainage, surrounding tissue

Cultures and imaging if needed to rule out deep infection or foreign bodies

Debridement of any non-healing tissue

Advanced dressing plan and clear home-care instructions

Weekly follow-up until closure

Go to the ER for heavy bleeding, suspected fractures, loss of function, deep puncture wounds, or any wound you can’t control at home. Come to us for ongoing wound management, wounds that aren’t healing as expected, and follow-up care after initial treatment.

Not usually. Most insurance plans don’t require a referral for wound care follow-up.

Warning signs include increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus-like drainage, fever, or red streaks moving away from the wound. Any of these warrant a same-day evaluation.

Some scarring is expected with any significant wound, but the quality of wound care has a major impact on the final appearance. Proper moisture balance, protection from re-injury, and, when appropriate, scar management therapies all help produce the best possible cosmetic outcome.

It varies dramatically by wound size, depth, and type. Minor lacerations close in 1–2 weeks.
