You’re Not Alone, and You Have Options

Medical laser therapy has quietly become one of the most useful tools in podiatry. It doesn’t hurt, it doesn’t require medication that has to be monitored with bloodwork, and it doesn’t keep you off your feet. You walk in, you walk out, and you go back to your day. At Ironworks, we use FDA-cleared laser therapy primarily for toenail fungus and for stubborn heel pain.

Toenail fungus (onychomycosis)

Oral antifungal medication works, but it means months of pills and liver monitoring, and it isn’t an option for everyone. Topical polishes are slow and unreliable because they struggle to penetrate the nail plate. Laser energy passes through the nail to target the fungus underneath, session by session, with no prescription and nothing to apply at home. Because nails grow slowly, most patients see clearer nail appear gradually over 6 to 12 months as healthy nail replaces the damaged nail.

Plantar fasciitis

That first-step-in-the-morning heel pain is one of the most common problems we see, and one of the most frustrating when stretching and orthotics haven’t fixed it. Laser therapy is FDA-cleared for chronic plantar fasciitis. It works by calming inflammation in the fascia and supporting the tissue’s own repair process, rather than masking the pain. Most patients pair it with the basics that actually matter: proper support, targeted stretching, and activity adjustments.

Chronic heel pain

Not every sore heel is plantar fasciitis. Heel pain can also come from the fat pad, the Achilles insertion, nerve irritation, or a stress reaction in the bone. We diagnose first, with in-office digital X-ray when it’s warranted, then use laser therapy where it’s appropriate as part of a plan built around what’s actually causing your pain.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first laser visit begins with a diagnosis, because not every thick nail is fungal and not every sore heel is plantar fasciitis. We confirm what we’re treating before we recommend laser therapy.

A hands-on exam, and often a small nail sample or in-office X-ray to confirm the diagnosis

A review of what you've already tried and how your feet respond to it

An honest discussion of your options: laser, topical, oral, orthotic, and injection

If laser is the right fit and you're ready to start, the first session can usually be done the same day

A follow-up schedule and a realistic timeline for what results should look like

Frequently Asked Questions

No. There are no needles and no anesthetic required. Most patients feel nothing at all, or a mild warmth, and read their phone through the session.

It depends on what we’re treating. Toenail fungus typically takes a series of sessions spaced out over several weeks, with the visible result following as the new nail grows. Heel pain protocols are usually a short course of sessions over a few weeks. We’ll give you the specific number at your first visit, not a vague “we’ll see.”

Most insurance plans consider laser treatment for toenail fungus cosmetic and do not cover it. Coverage for heel pain varies by plan and diagnosis. We’ll tell you the cost up front before anything is scheduled, so there are no surprises.

For heel pain, many patients notice a difference within the first few weeks. For toenail fungus, be patient: visible improvement takes several months because it depends entirely on healthy new nail growing out from the base.

For most patients, yes. Oral antifungals require liver function monitoring and aren’t appropriate for everyone, particularly patients with liver conditions or those taking medications that interact with them. Laser therapy has no systemic side effects. That said, oral medication is still the right choice for some people, and we’ll tell you honestly if you’re one of them.
