You’re Not Alone, and You Have Options

Nail fungus is common and treatable.

Toenail fungus (onychomycosis) is common, stubborn, and a source of quiet embarrassment for millions of people. Thick, yellow, crumbling nails aren’t just cosmetic, untreated fungus can spread to skin, other nails, and, in diabetics, become a source of serious infection.

How we treat it

Laser treatment, no medication, no downtime

Prescription topical antifungals

Oral antifungals for severe cases (with liver monitoring)

Nail debridement for thick, painful fungal nails

What to Expect at Your First Visit

A nail fungus visit starts with confirming that what you have is actually fungus (not every thick or yellow nail is). Then we build a realistic treatment plan.

Plan on 30 to 45 minutes. Bring the shoes you wear most, and don’t polish the affected nails for the visit.

Exam of the affected nails and surrounding skin

Nail clipping sample for lab confirmation (often needed before insurance covers certain treatments)

Discussion of your treatment options: laser, topical, oral, or combinations

Debridement (thinning) of thick nails for immediate comfort and better treatment penetration

Review of expected timeline (9 to 18 months for full clearing)

Plan for preventing reinfection through shoes and socks

Frequently Asked Questions

Fungus thrives in warm, moist environments, sweaty shoes, public pools, locker rooms, pedicure salons with inadequate sterilization. It often starts as athlete’s foot and spreads to the nail.

The fungus lives under and within the nail plate, which is essentially dead keratin with no blood supply. Medications reach the fungus slowly, and treatment requires the affected nail to grow out completely before full clearing is visible, 9–18 months for a big toenail.

Oral antifungal medications (terbinafine) have the highest cure rates (60–80%). Laser treatment is an excellent drug-free alternative for patients who can’t take oral medication.

Best to avoid it until treated. Nail salons that don’t properly sterilize tools can spread fungus.

Dark polish and heavy coats can trap moisture and potentially worsen infection. Breathable treatments or antifungal nail polishes are better if you want to cover discolored nails during treatment.
