You’re Not Alone, and You Have Options

Ingrown toenails are extremely common and almost always fixable in a single 15-minute office procedure.

An ingrown toenail is a toenail that’s curved or grown into the surrounding skin, painful, often infected, and almost impossible to fix with bathroom surgery. At Ironworks we treat ingrown toenails in a 15-minute in-office procedure under local anesthesia. For recurring ingrowns, we offer a permanent solution that prevents the nail edge from growing back.

How we treat it

Local anesthetic numbing of the toe (the only uncomfortable part, and it's brief)

Removal of the ingrown portion of the nail

Optional matrix treatment to permanently prevent regrowth on that edge

Bandaging and go home

Most patients return to normal activity within 24 hours

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Most ingrown toenail visits end with the problem resolved the same day. We use local anesthesia to keep the procedure painless.

Plan on 30 to 45 minutes total. Most patients drive themselves home and return to normal activity within 24 hours.

Quick exam of the affected toe

Discussion of options: partial removal for a first-time ingrown, or permanent matrix treatment for recurrences

Local anesthesia: a brief numbing injection (the only uncomfortable part)

The procedure itself, typically 10 to 15 minutes

Bandaging and clear home-care instructions

Follow-up in 1 to 2 weeks to check healing

Frequently Asked Questions

Several factors: improper nail trimming (cutting too short or rounded), tight shoes, toe injury, genetics (some people have naturally curved nails), and fungal infections that thicken nails. Addressing the cause helps prevent recurrence.

Cut straight across, not rounded. Leave the nail edge just past the tip of the toe, not flush with the skin.

Mild early cases may respond to warm soaks, gentle elevation of the nail edge with a small cotton wisp, and well-fitting shoes. If pain persists, drainage develops, or the area becomes red and swollen, home care isn’t enough, see us before infection develops.

Yes, with appropriate precautions. We evaluate circulation before doing the procedure, and diabetic patients are monitored more closely afterward.

After removing just the ingrown edge, the nail looks slightly narrower but otherwise normal to most observers. If the entire nail is removed, a new nail will grow back over 6–12 months, or, if the matrix is permanently treated, the nail will remain narrower indefinitely.
