You’re Not Alone, and You Have Options

Not every bunion needs surgery.

A bunion is a bony bump at the base of the big toe that develops as the joint shifts out of alignment over years. They’re partly genetic and partly caused by footwear and biomechanics. Some bunions never hurt; others become debilitating. Treatment depends entirely on how much they affect your life.

Non-surgical Treatment

Wider, softer footwear with a roomier toe box

Custom orthotics to correct underlying biomechanics

Bunion splints and pads

Anti-inflammatory medication for flare-ups

Surgical treatment

When conservative care no longer provides relief, bunion surgery is highly effective. At Ironworks, we offer both traditional open procedures and minimally invasive bunion surgery, smaller incisions, less scarring, and a faster return to regular shoes. We’ll review your X-rays with you and explain exactly what your anatomy requires.

Frequently Asked Questions

They can provide temporary symptom relief, particularly at night, but they don’t reverse the bony deformity. Bunion splints cannot “straighten” a bunion permanently, despite what some marketing suggests.

Most bunions gradually progress over years to decades. Some remain stable; others worsen significantly.

In moderation, yes, most patients can return to reasonable heels (under 2 inches) after full recovery. Very high or narrow heels increase the risk of bunion recurrence and aren’t recommended for long-term wear.

Genetics plays a significant role. The foot structure that predisposes to bunions runs in families.

Minimally invasive: 6–8 weeks to return to most shoes, 3–6 months for full recovery and final settling. Traditional open procedures: 8–12 weeks to regular shoes, 6–12 months for complete recovery.
